Chris Liston and Craig Lightfoot report: Gerard White won the 69km BSCC handicap at Miners Rest on Saturday, with his older son Liam beside him on the podium in third, and Scott Denno in second. Denno and White, from the limit mark, set out from Dowling Forest in mild conditions with a stiff northwesterly breeze. The race circuit, which will be used in the Australian Masters' Road Championships in late September, heads north on Gillies Road, west on the Creswick-Addington to the Sunraysia Hwy, then south and back to Miners Rest and the racecourse. As the laps counted through it became evident that scratch were not making ground through the field, nor were the middle markers gaining at a rate fast enough to pick up the outmarkers. Gerard White made a move to break from Denno in the last few kilometres as the groups started to come together. White took a solo win with a gap to Denno, and a further gap to the next bunch, where Liam White, after a characteristic tough attacking race, took third from his bunch. Reigning BSCC Masters Road Champion Adam Smith warmed up for his 2010 title defence by taking the fastest time from second scratch. Smith is also a contender for the Australian Masters Championships. BSCC senior handicap, Australian Masters Championship course, Saturday 21 August 1st G.White 19:00 (limit) Junior racing Chris Liston writes: In BSCC's junior racing at Miners Rest, Nicholas White almost emulated his father's win. Nichloas raced the BSCC 32 km J15 race from limit, led all the way, and was caught at the final sprint. The junior riders were challenged in a tough, tactical race designed to bring the club's motto of "passion, perseverance and pride" out of the BSCC youngsters. With 10 km to go, White had a lead of several minutes on the two other riders most likely to be in the finish, Joshua Liston from second scratch and Angus Lyons from scratch. At the last turn, with the finish line almost in sight, White was still holding on, and made a charge for the line. Lyons and Liston, two of the state's top riders in their age group, had come together, and their combined power relegated White's gutsy campaign to third placing. Lyons out-sprinted Liston to take yet another win in a race time of 54:50. Rochelle Liston claimed a win in the sub-junior handicap, three laps of a 2-km "hot dog" out and back course. Liston reeled in outmarker Bailey Cody and was working hard to stay away from Tyson Cody when bad luck side lined Tyson, the older Cody. A wayward shoe-lace ran amok in the scratchman's chain ring at the turnaround. Tyson was unhurt, and remounted and persisted in the chase, but he lost his momentum and a chunk of time that proved decisive.
