BSCC April MTB race: results

April 13 2010

Anthony "Ant" Rogan, chief marshal for the day, writes:

BSCC second full-length MTB race of the year was held at Invermay on our first wintery morning of the year. This track is a fast, fun loop, and if you pick your lines carefully you can really go fast.  There is one short steep climb toward the end, just keep you in check.

It was cold. Fortunately the rain never really made an appearance. There had already been a far bit of precipitation in the days before the event, so the dirt was wet and there were some large puddles to negotiate around or through. One small section was particularly soft and sloppy so riders needed to pick good lines to get through unscathed, or at least a little less muddy. All riders and bikes were filthy by race's end, but everyone seemed to agree that the tougher climatic conditions made for a fun and challenging race.

Eight juniors on a variety of different bikes, including the youngest competitor, 5-year-old Max Oliver on skinny tires, braced themselves against the cold and smashed it.   What an effort!  They raced for one lap on the three-kilometre course, and their times were great, ranging from 13:10 to 20 minutes. Well done to all the kids.

There were not too many seniors riding in A grade, due to the state series taking place at the You Yangs. Four riders battled it out at good speed, with Warren Faneco riding smoothly and pulling away early, and maintaining his lead for the 70 minutes. Dale Boucher came in second, with John Carmody third. Both rode very consistent lap times.

There was a big field of thirteen for the B grade race, and they too raced over 70 minutes. Young Joel MacAllister, who no doubt will be an A grade entrant next race, sat on Mick Veal’s back wheel for the first lap, with Tim Oliver not far behind. Joel then put the pedal down and got on the gas. Veal and Oliver stayed in touch on the second lap, but couldn’t maintain the pace. Joel opened up a nice gap and held on comfortably to place first. Mick Veal came in second after putting a bit of space between himself and Tim Oliver (third) on the last lap.

There were enough numbers for a C grade race and five competitors took to the trail for 60 minutes. Gail Oliver looked like a seasoned performer in the mud and took the lead early and stayed there. Teenager Hugh Ingram rode very consistent 15-minute laps, coming in second. Adam Lewis came in third in his first race of the year.

MTB Race, Sunday 11th April

The next BSCC MTB race will be held on Sunday 11th April at Invermay. BSCC held its first MTB race on this course in 2008.  There’s nothing technical, and the junior course is flat with a climbing ratio of 1:37.

Juniors
Junior registration begins at 9:30 AM,  course familiarization is at 9:50 and racing starts at 10 AM.  The juniors will race for two 3-kilometre laps.  To see a course map, click HERE

Seniors
The seniors races will begin at 10:45 AM.  Riders will break into A, B & C grades. A & B will race for 70 minutes, and C grade will race for 60 minutes.  The senior course is different from the junior course: we’ve added a seriously steep hill for the seniors ...  The course distance is 3.62 kilometres, and the course map is HERE. (Ignore the map heading that says junior course - ed.)

Directions
The start-finish is on Alkera Road in Invermay.  The easiest way to get there is out Swinglers Road, turn right into Dawes Road and then left into Alkera Road.  We’ll have "Caution - Cyclists" signs at Dawes Road to help you.  The links above are Google Maps, so zoom out and see exactly where the course is.

Marshals
Marshals for this race are Anthony Rogan and Simon Ellis.
